Historic Facts
Yuba City’s western horizon is dominated by the Sutter Buttes, known as the “Smallest Mountain Range in the World”.

The “Thompson Seedless” Grape first grew in Yuba City after farmer, William Thompson received three European grape vines from Nurserymen of Rochester, NY. While the Thompson Seedless is no longer produced commercially in Sutter County, more acres are planted with this variety than with any other raisin grape.

Through the 1960’s, Sutter County was known as the “Peach Bowl of the World”. Where is Yuba City’s First Street? It no longer exists as it was built over with what is now the levee on the west side of the Feather River.
Second Street boasts some of the city’s oldest homes. The street even boasts a house designed by famed architect Julia Morgan.
John Joseph Montgomery, born in Yuba City on February 15, 1858, was the first American to build a glider that flew. First accomplished in Otay Mesa, CA in 1883, demonstrations continued through 1911. Montgomery was also the first to achieve practical control of his craft in the air. More Info
