YCPD Canine Unit

The Police Department's Canine Unit consists of three service dogs.  K9 Officer Riggs is a two-year-old Dutch Sheppard, and he is trained in apprehension and firearm searches.  Officer Kenny Sowles is the handler for Riggs and has been a canine handler for 5 years.  K9 Officer Eddie is a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois and he is trained in apprehension and article searches.  Officer Brandon Martin is the handler for Eddie and he has been a canine handler for 3 years.  K9 Officer Rip is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois and he is trained in apprehension and article searches.  Officer Allec Mitchell is the handler for Rip and has been a canine handler for 1 year.

Two of the department's canines recently retired.  Fasko served the community for seven years and was trained in apprehension and article searches.  He received numerous awards to include "Top Team", "Top Competitor", and "Search" from the Western States Police Canine Association Competitions.  Fasko is now living with his former handler, Sergeant Kris Gibson.  Gunner served the community for seven and a half years and was trained in apprehension and article searches.  He received numerous awards to include "Top Team", "Agility", and "Obedience" from the Western States police Canine Association competitions.  Gunner is now living with his former handler, Officer Kenny Sowles.
