Fats, Oils and Grease

What is F.O.G.?

Fats, Oils and Grease (F.O.G.) are by-products of cooking and can be found in various food sources.  F.O.G. becomes a problem for residents, businesses, and the community when they are not properly disposed of.

The following are examples of some of the products in your kitchen that should NOT be disposed of down the drain:

  • Meat Fats
  • Cooking Oil
  • Dairy Products
  • Shortening
  • Food Scraps
  • Butter/Margarine
  • Sauces
  • Baked Goods

What happens?

When Fats, Oils and Grease are disposed of down the drain, they cause a build up within the sewer system.  This causes an obstruction which does not allow wastewater to flow freely to the Wastewater Treatment Facility.  Wastewater then backs up and overflows either into your home, business, or within the community.  These overflows are unsanitary and costly to clean up.

Helpful tips:

Here are some helpful tips on how F.O.G. can be properly managed in your kitchen:

1. Pour cold fats, oils and grease into a tightly sealed container and dispose of into the garbage.  Never pour fats, oil and grease down the drain or toilet.

2. Remove fats, oils and grease from kitchen utensils, equipment and food preparation areas with a scraper or paper towel and dispose in the garbage.  Keep grease out of wash water.

3. Use sink strainers to capture excess food waste and place all food scraps in the garbage.  Do not use a garbage disposal to dispose of excess food waste.
